===== Information for Users ("READ-ME") ================

(this information is also available as an HTML file when Trawler is
running)
Trawler(TM)
A web search and retrieval program
For Windows 95 and NT
Installation _ Getting Started _ How to Use Trawler _ Purchasing Trawler
Index _ Copyright
Trawler is a powerful and easy-to-use web browser and information
gatherer. It allows you to query any kind of web database and transfer
web information to your own disk drive. It does this by following
hypertext links that a database query produces. Trawler can follow links
from multiple databases simultaneously. Trawler is a serious power tool
for gathering information from the web.
===========================
Installation
To install Trawler, just run setup. Setup puts some .ocx and .dll files
in your windows\system directory, and the file "trawler.mdb" in your
windows directory.
If for some reason you do not want to put trawler.mdb in your windows
directory, just set an environment variable, TRAWLDB, to point to
wherever trawler.mdb is. You can do this by putting a line similar to the
following one in your autoexec.bat file:
set TRAWLDB=c:\substitute_here
===========================
Getting Started
Here's how to use Trawler to retrieve and view some data in 9 easy steps:
1.Establish a connection to the Internet (using winsock or similar
product).
2.Get a list of databases by clicking on the (picture of a little
house) button.
3.Click on the Alta Vista link. This will bring up Alta Vista's search
page.
4.Enter a search term (eg "shareware) and click on submit.
5.Click on the (picture of a hand held scanner) button.
This causes Trawler to scan the Alta Vista links page. Trawler
collects every hypertext link on the page and runs a filter on the
collection, weeding out all the extraneous links, keeping only the
ones that point to external web pages. Trawler then presents a popup
screen containing the good links.
6.Click on the Fetch pages button.
Trawler will start up another program called fetcher.exe which does
the actual work of fetching your pages and storing them. After
starting up fetcher, Trawler is immediately ready for continued
browsing, while fetcher is busy doing the downloading.
7.When fetcher is done, click on its Quit button.
8.Click on the (picture of an open folder) button in Trawler which
lets you view files and images on your disk drive.
9.Click on the download link to go to the download directory. There
should be an html file called trawler.htm that you can click on.
This file contains links that point to all the pages you have just
downloaded. Click on a link to view a page.
That's it. You have just started using Trawler. Continue on to the next
section to learn even more about Trawler.
===========================
How to Use Trawler
If you've read the "Getting started" section, you already know that
Trawler is a web browser with the ability t o scan any web page for
hypertext links. Trawler collects these links, runs them through a
filter, starts up the fetcher program, and tells fetcher to get the
links.
The Create filters popup screen
You can create your own filters by clicking on the (picture of filters)
button which will bring up the "Create filters" popup screen.
If you want to create a filter for a new database, type the url string of
the database into the (picture of the "add new urls" box) textbox and
press the button.
Then type a filter string into the (picture of the "add new substring"
box) textbox and press the button.
The text of the filter string should be a substring that is found in the
links that you want to eliminate and not have fetcher follow. Many times
this will be part of the url string. Other links that you may want to
filter out are those that point to advertising copy.
You can eliminate typing in the url of a new database by simply viewing
the search screen of the database and then clicking on the (picture of
"display current url" button) button.
You can replace an old url string or filter string by typing new text in
one of the textboxes and clicking on the one of the "Replace" buttons.
The Fetch pages popup screen
If your filter fails to eliminate a few undesirable links, you can
manually eliminate them by selecting them with the mouse and clicking on
the (picture of "remove selected links" button) button.
You select links by:
1.clicking on them
2.holding down the shift or control key while clicking on them 3.or
clicking and dragging the mouse with the left mouse key held down.
You don't even have to click on the (picture of "remove selected links"
button) button. Just select links with the left mouse button and delete
them by clicking the right mouse button.
The Link timeout textbox tells fetcher how long to wait for data when
fetching a link.
Max dload filesize limits how many bytes of a big web page fetcher will
download.
Index filename is the file where Trawler puts links that point to the
files it has downloaded. This file is opened in append mode in the
download directory.
The Save selected links button is used to write out the links on the
screen to a file called links in the download directory. You can feed
these links to other software programs if you'd like.
When fetcher downloads a web page into a file, it puts a link into the
file that points to the original location of the web page. You can tell
fetcher to put the Original page link at the top or the bottom of the
downloaded page.
Another thing that fetcher can do is to adjust the image links in the
pages it downloads. Turning Adjust image links on, will cause the links
to be adjusted so that they point back to the original images at the site
where the page came from. This allows you to view your files with
graphics if you are online and Trawler is set to autoload images. Also,
due to the caching nature of many browsers and/or proxy servers, it
enables you to see the graphics when you are offline, if you have
previously visited that site.
The Configuration popup screen
Trawler was written to configure itself as it runs. If you get an error
message at any time about Trawler not being able to find a needed file,
or if you want to change Trawler's configuration manually, then click on
the (picture of stereo controls) button to produce a popup screen like
the one below and enter the data.
(picture of configuration popup screen)
"Databases file" refers to an html file, dbs.htm, that contains a list of
pre-configured web databases. You can view this list by clicking the
(picture of a little house) button. You can edit dbs.htm to add
additional web databases.
"Help file" is this file which you view by clicking the (picture of a
questiom mark) button.
Proxy servers
Some sites use a proxy server as a firewall to protect their
internal network. Trawler can deal with proxy servers.
"Proxy name" is the address of a proxy server if your site uses one.
"Proxy port" is the port of a proxy server if your site uses one.
"Use proxy" is a check box that you use to indicate if Trawler is to
use a proxy server.
"Fetcher program" is the location of the fetcher program that Trawler
uses (see Getting started).
"Startup file" is an html file that Trawler displays on startup. The file
Startup.htm contains a picture of a trawler. You can substitute another
file for startup.htm if you like.
The Base screen
The "Open" button lets you view files on your disk drive or on the web.
The "Save" button lets you save the file you are viewing. If the file
contains graphics, the graphics will be saved in separate files as well.
You may want to create a download directory in which to save your files.
The "Print" button lets you print the file you are viewing.
The "Info" button lets you see the html source of the file you are
viewing. Clicking it a second time lets you view it normally.
The "Reload" button reloads the file you are viewing.
The "Lightning" button saves a bookmark for the file you are viewing.
You may want to create a bookmark directory in which to save your
bookmarks.
The "Index" button lets you view and select a bookmark.
The "History" button lets you view and select pages you have already
visited.

===== About VENDINFO Files =============================
Each VENDINFO.DIZ file contains extensive information about a product.
This "human-readable" section is followed by a compressed data record
useable by automated tools. The data record allows BBSes and other
distributors to automate package handling, and provides users with a
wealth of product information. VENDINFO tools (free viewer for users,
free or inexpensive processors for distributors, editors for authors)
are available from many BBSes, disk vendors, and other sources.
